Our Champions of 2015

On the final day of the Swimming World Championships in Barcelona who caught Lollipop’s eye?

Was it Francesca Halsall who won Britain’s only swimming medal by taking bronze in 24.30 in the 50m freestyle?

Or was it Olympic champ Sun Yang who won the 1500m freestyle and his third gold in the competition?

Or the men’s 4×100 medley freestyle where the USA were disqualified and France who finished second took the Gold in the dramatic penultimate championship race?

It has to be Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte who broke the 50m breaststroke world record in Saturday’s semi-finals. Today she had to settle for silver in the final as Russian Yuliya Efimova won in 29.52 seconds – beating the Olympic champion by just 0.07 seconds with US swimmer Jessica Hardy (29.80) securing bronze.

But Plymouth-based 16-year-old Meilutyte was pleased with her performance and said: “Its great how much the breaststroke has stepped up with records being broken in the 50m, 100m and 200m events so it’s a great honour to be a part of that.”

After achieving another stunning world record in the semi finals of  the 100m breaststroke earlier this week  clocking one minute 04.30 seconds and winning the final, Meilutyte looks set to do wonders in Rio 2016.

Her overall performance throughout the championships definitely cements her as a world swimming star. And as she’s based in Britain maybe our GB team should take note.

With only one medal in the entire competition and Scot Dan Wallace setting a new national record of four minutes 13.72 by finishing seventh in the 400m individual medley final there is great talent but a lot of work to be done in the build up to Rio.

Retired Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington could only watch with BBC’s Gabby Logan as Britain struggled to win big on a world stage.

One year on after London 2012 the team will have to look at where it went wrong and search for Britain’s next star of swimming.

Whether Halsall or team-mate Hannah Miley  who equalled her fifth-place finish at the London Games in the 400m individual medley  will be ready for Gold at Rio remains to be seen. But one British based star certainly is.

“Go Lithuania!” Shouts Lollipop.
