Have things really changed Lollipop?

15 years and two months, 14 years and three months are the sentences Lollipop and I hear the two murderers David Norris and Gary Dobson were given for being involved in the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Is it enough?

“No. They should have both been given life,” says my Lollipop. “However I understand that they were juveniles when they committed the racist murder so it’s not possible for the judge to give life sentences, but it just doesn’t seem fair.”

“It probably doesn’t seem fair because Stephen’s parents have fought for 18 years for at least someone to be convicted.”

“I know. I really feel for them. No wonder Stephen’s Dad returned to Jamaica after all this.”

“He simply just couldn’t bear living here. It ruined his marriage, it ruined his family. Did you hear the interview Channel 4’s Jon Snow had with him?”

“Yes, stupid I watched it with you!”

“You were also on Twitter so I didn’t think you were even listening.”

“Well I was. I can tweet about Kim Kardashian’s new hair do and listen at the same time sis.”

“Really?” I sarcastically reply.

I only asked Lollipop this because one of the questions Snow raised about British police and society truly intrigued me.

He asked Mr Lawrence: “Has this changed your sense of what is going on in Britain now?”

Mr Lawrence replied he had nothing but praise for how the police were now dealing with the case in comparison to way it was initially dealt with in 1993.

However when you look at the recent and suspected racist murder of Pakistani student Anuj Bidve in Salford on Boxing Day it poses the question on whether society really has changed. People are still being killed for no reason at all on our streets. No law changes or improvements within the police forces seem to have stopped that. Although a man has been arrested for the murder of Anuj Bidve, unwarranted killings are still prevalent in our society.

Lollipop however adds: “You can’t prove that the killing of Anuj Bidve was a racist attack though sis. Like I said before that was just mindless violence.”

“Yes but others may believe it was racism.”

“There is no proof. You can’t compare them. But I get what you mean sis. Racism and violence is never going away.”

“Exactly.”

Although it’s a relief that Stephen Lawrence finally got justice, racism and murder is something that will always plague and ruin society. There’s nothing the police can do to stop this. Steps are being taken to find justice for such killings as we have seen today. The Daily Mail reported: 15 years we took the momentous decision to accuse five racist thugs of murder. Yesterday as Stephen Lawrence finally got justice, we were proved right about two of them. Now what about the other three…”

Let’s just hope it doesn’t take 18 years to prosecute the rest. “Right Lollipop?”

“Yes! My creepers have finally come! I don’t think I like them though sis. Too clumpy. They don’t look as good on me as they do on Rihanna.”

“Well she is an international superstar who often gets paid to look hot, so I doubt they ever will.”

“Oh thanks for the compliment sis,”

“No problem, Lollipop.”
